LAST WEEKEND, THIS WEEKEND, and our NEW MISSALS

The Ignatius Pew Missal, as I mentioned in my previous post, is our new missalette, which contains (in order) the Order of Mass, sung Mass settings, the Proper of the Mass for Sundays and Holy Days (Entrance Antiphon, Responsorial Psalm, Alleluia, and Communion Antiphon - all with music - plus the readings), the Proper of the Mass for weekdays (Entrance Antiphon, Psalm Response, and Communion Antiphon), just over 200 hymns, and more musical settings for the Responsorial Psalm.  The additional Responsorial Psalm settings in the back of the hymnal are written by Father Samuel F. Weber, OSB, of the famed St. Meinrad Archabbey in Indiana.  We have actually sung some of his Psalms here at Sacred Heart on occasion, and now you'll have the music to sing them as well.

As for the hymns, yes, there are a select few that are blacklisted here, but the ratio of quality hymns (actually sacred in both text and tune) to those that are blacklisted here (and should be in EVERY parish) in this book compared to the previous missalette is far better than most.  Further, the hymn texts on the most part are not watered down as you see in many missalettes/hymnals today.  "Thee", "thou", and "thy" have been retained, as (quoting the 1975 edition of Worship) "hymn texts are poetry and not conversational English."

This book is published yearly, while the previous missalettes are published seasonally.  Only one book, not three, per year, saving us hundreds of dollars per year (including shipping costs)..

As an organist of 10 years here at Sacred Heart (and 40 years overall), I truly think that if one must get a periodical "missalette", this is the one to get.  I am pleased that Father Bucci allowed me to introduce the book to him and subsequently have me order them.

THE NEXT TWO WEEKS and THE HYMNALS ARE BACK

As many may have noticed this week, our two hymnals have returned to the pews, thanks to our diocesan liturgical restrictions being pretty much lifted.  And some may have even read that Bishop Tobin has rescinded the dispensation from the obligation to attend Mass as of the weekend of June 6, which is (appropriately enough), the Solemnity of the Most Body and Blood of Christ ("Corpus Christi").

As a result, the Mass guides have been reduced to the readings, the music to the Psalm, Alleluia, and Communion responsory, and the hymn titles and where you can find them in the hymnals.  I listed the hymn references in the Mass guides so that, just like we have with the full-blown Mass guides, the need to "announce" the hymns continues to be eliminated.  This keeps the Mass flowing more smoothly, and it seems that a number of people caught on nicely on Ascension Thursday, especially at the evening Mass.

We are in the process of getting missalettes.  The Ignatius Pew Missal will be our new missalette, and instead of three separate books each year, this is one missal for the entire year which contains the Order of Mass, the readings for the Sundays and Holy Days, the antiphons (Entrance, Responsorial Psalm, and Communion) for the weekday Masses, and over 200 hymns.  Once these come in, I'll only have to list the hymns and where to find them, the musical setting of the Psalm, Alleluia, and Communion responsory, and the page on which the readings will be found.  Yes, there are some hymns that we continue to blacklist (those hymns that don't fit the criteria of what is called for in the Church's liturgy documents), but the ratio of good hymns to bad songs is far better (about 80-90% good music in the Ignatius Pew Missal, compared to about 20-30% in the previous missalette, Today's Missal and its companion still found in many parishes, the Music Issue).  Overall, add on the savings of having one shipment per year instead of three, and this is a very pleasing improvement.

Our two hardbound hymnals, the red hymnal, Worship, and the maroon hymnal, The Hymnal, will continue, of course, to be the source of the bulk of our hymns.

SUNDAY III OF PASCHALTIDE and a little primer on Latin (accents and pronunciations)

For those who follow (or at least try to follow) and sing the Latin sung Ordinary of the Mass, here's a quick ditty on syllables...

When setting the text to music, I follow what many of the older hymnals do (including chant books like the Liber Usualis, the Graduale Romanum, and the Gregorian Missal), that is, leaving an accent mark over the vowel of the accented syllable for words with three or more syllables.  One- and two-syllable words don't need said accent mark, obviously.  Two-syllable words are usually accented on the first syllable.  Words of three syllables or more, not always the case.  For example...

Benedíctus (as in "Benedictus qui venit", or "Blessed is he who comes") - note the accent is over the "i".  Might be hard to tell the accent over the dot if the font is small, but it is there.  Beh-neh-DEE-ctus.  (And note where the "c" is placed in the phonetic spelling, making the consonant cluster "ct" the beginning of the fourth syllable, unlike English, where the "c" would be at the beginning of the third.)

Laudámus (as in "Laudámus te", or "We praise you") - OK, you can see the accent more clearly over the "a", a non-dotted vowel.  Lau-DAH-mus.

Some other words that do use the first syllable for accent:

Dómine ("Lord") is one of those words - DOH-mee-meh, or more accurately, DAW-mee-neh.

To many, this may be useless trivia, but one may wonder, "You're using a computer.  How do you get the accent marks."  A few years back, I went into the abyss that is "Character map", found the accented vowels and wrote down (and eventually memorized, as well as Germanic umlauts) the five vowels in lower case with their accent marks, plus the "sometimes 'y'".  They go like this:

á = Hold the "Alt" key while typing "0225".
é = Hold the "Alt" key while typing "0233".
í = Hold the "Alt" key while typing "0237".
ó = Hold the "Alt" key while typing "0243".
ú = Hold the "Alt" key while typing "0250".
ý = Hold the "Alt" key while typing "0253".

Added bonus (albeit this pertains mainly to words in English):
è = (the accent down instead of up, which is often used for "Blessèd" when the two-syllable "Bless-èd" is intended, especially if not written under music, or to give certain past-tense verbs that extra syllable, as in traditional sung English) = Hold the "Alt" key while typing "0232".

Low Sunday, Quasimodo Sunday, Divine Mercy Sunday (whatever ya wanna call it!) ;)

The Second Sunday of Easter, no matter which way you slice it.  Traditionally known as "Low Sunday" (to contrast with the high feast of Easter the Sunday before) or "Quasimodo Sunday" ("Quasimodo" is the first word of the Introit of the day in Latin which translates, "Like newborn babes, alleluia, crave for pure spiritual milk, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia"), this day is now "Divine Mercy Sunday", as declared by Pope John Paul II in 2000.  It seems fitting that the first versicle of the day's Responsorial Psalm triples down on the words "His mercy endures for ever."

- NOTE: The Memorial Acclamation (We proclaim your death, O Lord...) and Amen are adaptations thereof.  Since the Mass setting was written in 1948, there was no memorial acclamation at that time.  The memorial acclamation was a 1969 add-on in the "Novus Ordo", what is now known as the "Ordinary Form of the Mass".  So, to keep with the same setting, I simply adapted the acclamation and the amen (which was simply a single "amen" at that time) to passages from Picchi's Mass.

You will hear my usual closing words - "Quod scripsi, scripsi!", well, its translation, "What I have written, I have written!" - in the Good Friday Passion.  In John's account, the chief priests say to Pilate about his inscription on the Cross of Christ, "You should not have written 'The King of Jews', but 'He said: I am the King of the Jews'."  Pilate's answer: "What I have written, I have written!"

IV Lent, St. Joseph's Day, and V Lent (and of zeppole withdrawals and worship sheets)

Friday, March 19, is the Solemnity of St. Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary.  9:00 Mass that morning will be in the Church.  Sadly, with the distancing rules still in place, we can't have them in the hall this year.  But we can definitely come to Mass, honor the good saint who was the great protector of Mary and Jesus, then go out and bring some zeppoles home.  If anyone knows the best place to get them, please let me know.  I'm considering the Original Italian Bakery on Atwood Ave. near St. Rocco's, since I travel north to go home.

Also, starting this weekend, you will see the Mass guides in trifold form.  You can fit more content in them if needed, and although the font sizes are exactly the same as the previous format, the smaller pages make these fonts come out at you more.  They're not swimming in the paper like before.  So instead of four 8-1/2 x 11 pages, there are now six 5-2/3 x 11 pages.  Width-wise, the new pages are almost like that of a standard pew-edition hymnal (in which the pages are 6 x 9 usually).
