VI Easter

I took the liberty of adding a few extra notes and listen links in this post.  On those links that emanated from Sacred Heart, which are in the form of YouTube videos, I added some information on the music via "title cards" within the videos.  Enjoy!

MUSIC FOR HOLY MASS

Ordinary: Cristo Risusciti (Luigi Picchi) (Memorial and Amen are adapted)

The rest:
Entrance hymn: Christ the Lord is ris'n today (Worship hymnal, #452) (Listen)
- The tune is "Surgit in haec dies", on which the current Mass setting we are using ("Cristo Risusciti") is based.  The listen link given was recorded from our choir loft on VI Easter three years ago.  The sung Sanctus, Memorial, Amen, and Agnus Dei are also on this link, which I aptly titled "Fun with 'Surgit in Haec Dies'".
Psalm 67: R./ O God, let all the nations praise you (Sam Schmitt) (PDF) (Listen)
- Another clip from three years ago.  The composer, Sam Schmitt, like me, is one of several composers who contributed Psalm settings to the Chabanel Psalm Project, started by Jeff Ostrowski, at Corpus Christi Watershed.  I have used a number of Sam's settings from these pages here at Sacred Heart.  These settings, by the way, are free to use in parishes.
Alleluia: O filii et filiae (Mode II/BMP) (PDF)
Offertory hymn: The strife is o'er (Worship hymnal, #451) (Listen)
Communion music:
- (11:15) Concordi laetitia (Mode VI)
- (all others) Psalm 51, R./ The Holy Spirit will teach you, alleluia, all the things I have said unto you, alleluia, alleluia (BMP, adapted in part from Parce, Domine, Mode I) (PDF)
Meditation hymn: I vow to thee, my country (on sheets provided in the pew) (Listen)
- Music by Gustav Holst, from the "Jupiter" movement of his work, "The Planets".  Another hymn, "O God, beyond all praising", which is in our Worship hymnal, also uses this this tune.  The listen link given here is from the funeral of Princess Diana at Westminster Abbey.
Recessional hymn: A hymn of glory let us sing (Worship hymnal, #469)
- The tune is the same as "Ye watchers and ye holy ones", which we sang last weekend.

IV Easter, and Where to Find the Latin Sung Mass Responses

To jump right to the music list, click here.

Some people asked me over the past couple of weeks, "Hey, where do you find the Latin responses for Mass"?  I have the answer for you.

I call your attention to the red Worship hymnal for this.  Pay heed only to the words, not necessarily the music, as most of the time, we use a setting different than what's written.  The words are the same, regardless of setting, although you might get a repeat of a word or phrase here and there.

The Kyrie (which we usually sing in Advent and Lent) is at #340.  (Incidentally, in the Latin Mass, the Kyrie is the one Ordinary part that is in Greek, not Latin.)
The Gloria is right below, at #341.
The Sanctus is at #348.
On occasion, we use the Latin Mortem tuam annuntiamus, Domine as the Memorial Acclamation (that is, the response to "The mystery of faith", or "Mysterium fidei").  That is at #349.  The translation, by the way, is simply We proclaim your death, O Lord, and profess your resurrection, until you come again.
The Agnus Dei at is #353.
Finally, Father will on occasion conclude Mass with Ite Missa est, alleluia, alleluia, to which we respond Deo gratias, alleluia, alleluia.  That is at #354 (second staff).

MUSIC FOR HOLY MASS

- (all others) At the Lamb's high feast we sing (Worship hymnal, #459)

Alleluia "O Filii et Filiae" (BMP) (PDF)
Offertory hymn: Crown him with many crowns (Worship hymnal, #496)

- (11:15) Ave Maria (Perosi)
- (all others) Psalm 23 - R./ I am the good shepherd, alleluia (BMP) (PDF)

The Three-Day Weekend, and about Adaptations

To jump to the music list, click here.

About Adaptations in some Mass settings...

Two of our most familiar Latin settings that a number of you sing very well at Mass are the Laus Tibi Christe Mass by Federico Caudana (which we use during most of June and most of November, plus the Kyrie from that Mass in Lent) and the Cristo Risusciti Mass by Luigi Picchi (which we use during Paschaltide, after all, it's based on a tune written for Paschaltide).

At the time these two Masses were published (Cristo Risusciti was published in 1934, Laus Tibi Christe in 1963), there was no Memorial Acclamation in the Mass, and the Amen at the end of the Canon of the Mass (now known as the Eucharistic Prayer) was simply a single Amen (do do-re).

So, while the Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus, and Agnus Dei are from the actual Mass setting by the aforementioned composers, I had taken the liberty of adapting the Memorial Acclamation (in English) and Amen triplex to fit the theme of the two Masses.

In the Laus Tibi Christe Mass, I used the When we eat this bread... acclamation, adapted to the opening passages of the Gloria from that Mass, and simply used the Amen triplex that concludes the Gloria to conclude the Eucharistic Prayer.

In the Cristo Risusciti Mass (which we are singing now), I used the We proclaim your death, O Lord... acclamation, adapted to the opening and closing passages of the Agnus Dei.  The Amen triplex is also adapted to the opening passage of the Agnus Dei, but in a much more festive way.  As this Mass setting is based on a 12th century Easter hymn tune (which is in our Worship hymnal, by the way, #452), this was an easy task for me.
