August 2022

MUSIC FOR HOLY MASS

ORDINARY OF THE MASS:
Gloria: said, or Holy Angels Mass (BMP) (omitted on First Friday)
Sanctus through Agnus Dei: A Community Mass (Richard Proulx, 1937-2010)

ALLELUIA: "O Clemens" (BMP, adapted from the ending of the Mode V chant, Salve Regina).
- NOTE: With First Friday (August 5) being the Optional Memorial of the Dedication of the Basilica of St. Mary Major and the Solemnity of the Assumption coming up, the tune is fitting.

The rest...

Psalm 45: R./ The queen stands at your right hand arrayed in gold (BMP) (PDF)
Offertory hymn: Immaculate Mary ("Lourdes Hymn"/Pew Missal, #164)
Communion music:
- Responsory: Magnificat, R./ All generations shall call me blessed (BMP) (PDF)
- or Motet: Ave Maria (Lorenzo Perosi)
Mediation hymn: Salve Regina (Chant, Mode V/Worship hymnal, #703)
Recessional hymn: Tell out, my soul ("Woodlands"/Worship hymnal, #534)
- NOTE: The hymn text is a paraphrased translation of the Magnificat.

August 21 - Sunday XXI of the Year

Entrance hymn: All people that on earth do dwell ("Old Hundredth"/Pew Missal, #80)
- NOTE: For a real treat, listen to The Old Hundredth Psalm Tune, the arrangement by Ralph (or "Raph", pronounced "Rafe") Vaughan Williams for the Coronation of HRM Elizabeth II of England.  Funny note is Vaughan Williams himself once called his arrangement "a mess-up of 'Old Hundredth'".  Many probably sang the hymn "Praise God from whom all blessings flow" (same tune) before hearing "All people that on earth do dwell".  I did.
Psalm 117: R./ Go out to all the world and tell the Good News (BMP) (PDF, starts at bottom of first page)
Offertory hymn: Jerusalem, my happy home ("Land of Rest"/Maroon hymnal, #585, first tune)
Communion hymn: O Esca Viatorum (Johann Michael Haydn)
Mediation hymn: O Food of exiles lowly ("Innsbruck"/Worship hymnal, #729)
- NOTE: The text here is a 20th century translation of the Latin "O Esca Viatorum".  The tune, given in the Worship hymnal as "Innsbruck", is also listed in some hymnals as "First Friday" (the old "People's Mass Book", for one), with the hymn "O Sacred Heart, all-holy" (making the "First Friday" tune moniker all the more appropriate).
Recessional hymn: Go, make of all disciples ("Ellacombe"/Pew Missal, #137)

August 28 - Sunday XXII of the Year

Entrance hymn: Christ is made the sure foundation ("Westminster Abbey"/Pew Missal, #104)
Psalm 68: God, in your goodness, you have made a home for the poor (Fr. Samuel Weber, OSB)
Offertory hymn: Go, make of all disciples ("Ellacombe"/Pew Missal, #137)
Communion music:
- Responsory: Psalm 71, R./ O Lord, I will be mindful of your justice alone (BMP) (PDF, first page)
- or Motet: Cantate Domino canticum novum (Vincent d'Indy)
Meditation hymn: How sweet the Name of Jesus sounds ("St. Peter"/Maroon hymnal, #455)
Recessional hymn: To Jesus Christ, our sov'reign King ("Ich Glaub an Gott"/Pew Missal, #268)
