AUGUST 2023 at SACRED HEART

An action-packed month!
August 4 is not only our First Friday Sacred Heart Community Mass, but the Memorial of St. John Vianney, declared patron saint of parish priests upon his canonization by Pope Pius XI.
August 6 is not the Eighteenth Sunday of the Year, but the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord, one of the few feasts on fixed dates which, if it falls on a Sunday, takes precendence over the regularly-numbered Sunday.
August 15 is the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a Holy Day of Obligation.
Finally, August 26 at 5 PM is our annual Italian Heritage Mass in which we honor SS. Pietro Martire e Domenico Abate, patrons of Fornelli, Italy, birthplace of much of our parish ancestry.  A dinner dance immediately follows.  Check bulletin for details.

Without further ado...

MUSIC FOR HOLY MASS

ORDINARY OF THE MASS
(Except for the Italian Heritage Mass):
Gloria (if sung): Holy Angels Mass (BMP)
The rest: Community Mass (Richard Proulx)

(Italian Heritage Mass):
Memorial Acclamation: Annunziamo la tua morte... (Italian for "We proclaim your death...")
The rest: Messa Popolare "Laus Tibi Christe" (Federico Caudana)

Alleluia "O Clemens" (BMP) (adapted from that final part of the chant Salve Regina)
- Incidentally, the Alleluia is not an Ordinary, but a Proper, as the versicle differs from day to day.  The Ordinary consists of texts that are the same with EVERY Mass.

THE REST:

August 4 - First Friday/Sacred Heart Community Mass (6 PM)
Memorial of St. John Vianney

Entrance hymn: O Sacred Heart, O Love Divine (in Mass Guide)
Psalm 117: R./ Go out to all the world, and tell the Good News. (BMP, adapted from Adoremus in aeternum Sanctissimum Sacramentum, a brief responsory often used at the end of Eucharistic Benediction)
Offertory hymn: Alleluia! sing to Jesus ("Hyfrydol"/Pew Missal, #84, verses 1 and 4)
Communion hymn: Panis Angelicus (Hungarian tune/in Mass Guide)
Recessional hymn: To Jesus' Heart, all-burning ("Cor Amoris"/in Mass Guide)

August 6 - Feast of The Transfiguration of the Lord

Entrance hymn: O wondrous type, O vision fair ("Wareham"/Maroon hymnal, #119)
Psalm 97: R./ The Lord is King, the Most High over all the earth (Richard Proulx/Pérè Joseph Gelineau, SJ/Worship hymnal, #1043)
Offertory hymn: All hail the power of Jesus' Name ("Coronation"/Pew Missal, #79)
Communion hymn: Fairest Lord Jesus ("Schönster Herr Jesu"/Maroon hymnal, #346, first tune)
- NOTE: The tune name appears in the hymnal as "Fairest Lord Jesus".  However, at the time the Maroon hymnal was first published (1943, although titled "The Hymnal 1940" - basically during World War II), many German hymn tune names were changed, mostly to English or Latin titles.
Meditation hymn: I worship thee, Lord Jesus ("Christus Ist Mein Leben"/Maroon hymnal, #252)
- NOTE: For the same reason as above, this tune is listed in the hymnal as "Christ Is My Life".
Recessional hymn: Crown him with many crowns ("Diademata"/Pew Missal, #119)

August 13 - Sunday XIX through the Year

Entrance hymn: God of our fathers ("National Hymn"/Pew Missal, #139)
Psalm 85: R./ Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation (BMP)

Recessional hymn: Mine eyes have seen the glory ("Battle Hymn"/Worship hymnal, #686)

August 15 - The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (9 AM and 7 PM)

Entrance hymn: Hail, holy Queen enthroned above ("Salve Regina Caelitum"/Worship hymnal, #702)
Psalm 45: R./ The queen stands at your right hand arrayed in gold (BMP)
Offertory hymn: O Sanctissima ("Sicilian Mariners"/Pew Missal, #215)
- NOTE: The tune also appears in some hymnals as "O du Fröliche".

Meditation hymn: Salve Regina (Mode V/Worship hymnal, #703)
Recessional hymn: Tell out, my soul ("Woodlands"/Worship hymnal, #534)

August 20 - Sunday XX through the Year

Entrance hymn: Praise, my soul, the King of heaven ("Lauda Anima"/Pew Missal, #230)
Psalm 67: R./ O God, let all the nations praise you (Sam Schmitt)
Offertory hymn: Your hands, O Lord, in days of old ("Mozart"/Worship hymnal, #750)
Communion responsory: Magnificat (Tone 8G and Ciro Grassi)
- NOTE: The Grassi parts will depend on voice availability.
Meditation hymn: How sweet the Name of Jesus Sounds ("St. Peter"/Maroon hymnal, #455)
Recessional hymn: Tell out, my soul ("Woodlands"/Worship hymnal, #534)

August 26 - Italian Heritage Mass (5 PM)
August 27 - Sunday XXI through the Year

Entrance hymn: For all the saints ("Sine Nomine"/Pew Missal, #130)
- NOTE (or perhaps "chuckle"): Leave it to the composer, Ralph Vaughan Williams, to name his tune "Sine Nomine", that is, "without name" - LOL.
Psalm 138: R./ Lord, your love is eternal; do not forsake the work of your hands (Richard Proulx/Pérè Joseph Gelineau, SJ/Worship hymnal, #925)
Offertory hymn: From all thy saints in warfare ("St. Theodulph"/Pew Missal, #134)
- NOTE: This tune, also known by its German title, "Valet Will Ich dir Geben", is the same tune as "All glory, laud, and honor", a Palm Sunday staple.
Communion music:
- (Saturday): Lodate Maria (Italian)
- (Sunday): Psalm 119, R./ He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me and I in him, says the Lord (BMP)
Meditation hymn: Soul of my Savior ("Anima Christi"/Pew Missal, #247)
Recessional hymn: Tell out, my soul ("Woodlands"/Worship hymnal, #534)
