First Friday, II Advent, and Immaculate Conception

First Friday Sacred Heart Community Mass at 6 PM, Optional Memorial of St. John Damascene (known as some books as St. John of Damascus).  St. John of Damascus wrote a few hymns, some of which were in our maroon hymnal until they were pulled due to the pandemic.  The only reason we didn't program any for this Mass is that his hymn texts were all Easter-themed, including one we do each year, The Day of Resurrection, and we are currently in Advent.  So we went with Advent hymns, plus At the Name of Jesus, utilizing that final verse, "Brethren, this Lord Jesus shall return again..."

Tuesday, December 8, is the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a Holy Day of Obligation.  Of course, many bishops, including ours, have dispensed with the obligation to attend.  However, I still call it a "Holy Day of Obligation", as this "pandemic" has to end sometime, thus the dispensation will end, too.  Further, on this day, we honor Mary and her Immaculate Conception, as Mary, under the title, Immaculate Conception, is the patroness of the United States of America.  So, this is really our national holyday.  Masses this day will be in the Church - 9 AM and 7 PM.
