- NOTE 2: The author of the text, Henry Williams Baker, and the composer of the tune, Henry Baker, are two different people.

Recessional hymn: A mighty fortress is our God ("Ein' Feste Berg") (Listen)

- Some may be thinking, "Why are you using a hymn written by Luther?"  Yes, I get it, he defected from the One True Church.  But he did write this great hymn which can easily be adapted to our Catholic viewpoint.  It reflects the Church Militant, as applied certainly in these testing times.  This hymn's theology is really more Catholic than much of the modern dreck that infiltrates many a Catholic hymnal today.

- Probably the best translation (or at least one of the best translations) of the beloved "Adoro Te Devote".  The Latin was penned in the 13th century by St. Thomas Aquinas (another St. Thomas, "who wouldda thunk?").  The English text (which will be provided) was translated by a 19th century Jesuit, Gerard Manley Hopkins.  Pay close attention to verses 2 and 3 when you sing (or listen to) this on Friday.  Good reflection on the Gospel of the day (the "doubting Thomas").  The tune is the same as another hymn we've sung before, "Jesus, Son of Mary".

Communion responsory: Ye sons and daughters ("O Filii et Filiae"/Mode II)

- This hymn, used mainly during Paschaltide, and especially Low Sunday (the Second Sunday of Easter), tells the Thomas story even more directly than the reflective hymn at the Offertory.  I omitted the Easter verses on the music sheet, but included the five verses that relate to the Gospel.

The Next Three Weekends (Pentecost, First Friday, Trinity, Corpus Christi)

There will be no hymnals or missalettes in the pews for a while, but during that time we will print the words to the hymns and the readings as bulletin inserts.  Also, we are printing the words to the Gloria in Latin, as during this time we usually use Latin settings that I think most at Sacred Heart are familiar with at this point.  I inherited these from my predecessor, Dave Sylvestre, who has also used these. ;)

Masses will be at the usual times: Saturday at 5 PM, Sunday at 7:30, 9, and 11:15 AM.

Friday, June 5, is the First Friday Sacred Heart Community Mass at 6 PM in the Church.

Also, please note (this will be in the bulletin anyways): all WEEKDAY Masses, at least for this week, will be in the CHURCH, not the chapel.

Also, please note that music may change as need arises.  We're reopening after a hiatus of almost three months.  We don't exactly know what to expect just yet.  If there are any changes in music, I will try to get it updated here in a timely manner.

A First Friday Reflection (in a musician's eyes)

The absence of Masses due to the COVID-19 "pandemic" (I'm using quotation marks for the word "pandemic", because I firmly believe the left wing is politicizing the daylights out of this, but nonetheless) has prompted me to utter these thoughts...

May, of course, is the Month of Mary, and a most opportune time to pray to our Blessed Mother via the Holy Rosary.  Don't just pray once, but pray often.  Pray for an end to the "pandemic".  Pray for the opening of churches and the restoration of public celebration of Holy Mass in all our churches.  Pray for a "return to normalcy" (term stolen by President Warren Harding), or perhaps even better than "normalcy".  Pray for our parish, the continuing recovery of our fearless leader, Father Bucci, for each other, for ourselves and our families.  Do it!

This Friday is May 1, the beginning of the Month of Mary.  But oddly enough, the month starts with the feast honoring her spouse, St. Joseph, not so much as her spouse as we do on March 19 (aka, "zeppole day"), but under the title St. Joseph the Worker.  This feast was instituted by Pope Pius XII in 1955 and is celebrated on the fixed date of May 1.  In the traditional calendar, this feast is of the First Class, in other words, holding the same rank as the March 19 feast of St. Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary.  In the modern calendar, it has been relegated to Optional Memorial (the March 19 feast is still a Solemnity, much higher rank), but can be elevated in the case of, let's say, a  patronal feast of a parish or a diocese.

For many of us laid off due to COVID-19, this is also a good time to pray that we may soon return to work!

While the usual St. Joseph hymns may be appropriate for the May 1 feast, I'd like to call attention to a particular hymn, Jesus, Thou Divine Companion.  This is in the Hymnal 1940 (our maroon hymnal) at #511, and is set to the tune "Pleading Savior" (which many may have sung with the hymn Sing of Mary, Pure and Lowly).  The first verse is thus:

Jesus, thou divine companion, by thy lowly human birth,

Thou hast come to join the workers, burden bearers of the earth.

Thou the carpenter of Naz'reth, toiling for thy daily food;

By thy patience and thy courage, thou hast taught us toil is good.

OK.  You may ask, "OK, so this hymn talks about work, but what does this have to do with St. Jospeh?"  Some may remember, especially back in the late 1960's and well into the 1970's, a pew book simply called Monthly Missalette, which was published (in illo tempore) by J.S. Paluch Company of Chicago, Illinois.  Monthly Missalette included the same hymn, but the third line was altered thus to reference St. Joseph:

Son of Joseph, gifted worker, toiling for thy daily food

Another hymn from the maroon hymnal that I fell in love with doesn't reference Joseph, but does promote work!  Come, labor on can be found at #576.  Very stirring tune, and I'll post the first verse:

Come, labor on; who dare stand idle on the harvest plain,

While all around him waves the golden grain?

And to each servant does the Master say: GO WORK TODAY!

Improperia (aka, the Reproaches)

Today being Good Friday, I'd like to expose a piece that's important to Good Friday liturgy that is hardly ever seen in hymnals anymore, let alone sung - well, not in the Ordinary Form.  That piece is known as the "Reproaches", or more formerly, the "Improperia".

The Reproaches is a chant that is traditionally sung during the Adoration of the Holy Cross.  It is written in two portions.  Some may recognize this antiphon:
- My people, what have I done to you?  Or in what have I offended you?  Answer me! 

Or, in Latin:

- Popule meus, quid feci tibi?  Aut in quo contristavi te?  Responde mihi!

These are the words of Christ.  The verses are very strong as well.

Part I
Sung twice:
My people, what have I done to you?  Or in what have I offended you?  Answer me.

V./ Because I led you out of the land of Egypt, you have prepared a Cross for your Savior.

(Traditionally, this is alternated with the Greek: "Hagios o Theos, / Hagios Ischyros, / Hagios Anthanatos, eleison himas,"  Each passage alternates Greek by chanters, then English as the response by full choir and/or congregation.  In a Latin Mass, it would be Greek then Latin.)

How Does a Laid-Off Organist Kill Time...

...besides potentially collecting unemployment pay?

I keep myself musically awake at all times.  Not only do I have to prepare for that day when the Bishop lifts the ban on public Masses and other celebrations within the church proper, I keep my composition skills awake as much as possible, too.  As some of you know, I'm in the midst of a large pet project.  It started out as Psalm 151, which was the Proper of the Mass set to music for Sundays and major feasts.  I've since been expanding it to The Christus Vincit Gradual, to also include weekdays (both ferial and sanctoral).  Some of the Responsorial Psalms and many of the Communion responsories you may have heard at Holy Mass at Sacred Heart are part of this ongoing project.

As I continue this project, I continue my prayers for the recovery of our fearless pastor, Father Bucci, for those suffering from the Corona Virus, and an eventual "return to normalcy", where one can once again go to Mass and get the full reception of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in the Most Holy Sacrament, where one can once again go to a market and get the basic necessities in normal quantities and not have to worry about hoarders and black market salespeople snatching them all (toilet paper, particularly), and my return to full duty as your organist.  Most importantly, my prayers for you, the wonderful people at Sacred Heart, who, along with Father Bucci, have given me the best nine years of my church music career which spans well over 3-1/2 decades.

I'm proud to say my daughter Jessica has taken up poetry writing again, something she did very well when she was a teenager.  She asked me if I could set her most recent poem to music.  I sent her a sample of just myself on guitar.  She has more to add to the poem, but thus far, she likes what she's heard.  This is our first father/daughter musical venture.

FINALLY, I'm considering doing a video of the Stations of the Cross and possibly a Tuesday evening posting thereof onto the parish Facebook page, as well as my own Facebook page.  I have to find my home copy of the booklet - the same one we use at Sacred Heart.  Something to turn to on Tuesday evenings and Friday afternoons in lieu of being able to physically be present there.  I obviously can't do Holy Communion (I'm not a priest, nor a trained extraordinary minister of Holy Communion).
