Gaudete Sunday (III Advent) and Some Liturgical Blurbs

I'm going to start with the liturgical blurbs.  If you just want to skip to the music, then click here.

CELEBRANT ORIENTATION IN THE MASS

I got a phone call the other day from someone who complimented the way Mass was celebrated.  However she wondered why Father was celebrating Mass "with his back turned to the people".  In all actuality, Father Bucci is not turning his back to the people, but facing in a direction known as "ad orientem", that is, "to the East", that is, the "liturgical East", or "facing the Lord", just as we, the congregation prays "facing the Lord".  This has a much more prayerful effect than the "facing the people" orientation, where it appears to be more of a dialog.  "Ad orientem" is the required orientation in the Traditional Latin Mass (which we will begin celebrating at 12:30 PM on First Sundays beginning January 5).  In the current Missal, "ad orientem" was never eliminated, but "versus populum" is an option.

In the same phone call, that person expressed (very politely) that she couldn't really hear Father when he's "ad orientem".  On the most part, going back to the Traditional Latin Mass, much of that Mass is whispered, and (in High Masses) often sung over by the choir.  So, if Father sounds faint, fret not.  The cues at which the congregation makes their responses are often audible, and in other cases, even visible.

EXTRAORDINARY FORM vs. ORDINARY FORM

Another question I overheard before one Mass by someone reading the bulletin: What is "Mass in the Extraordinary Form?"

Pope Benedict XVI, in his Moto Proprio Summorum Pontificum, gave permission for widespread use of the Traditional Latin Mass, that is, Mass according to the Roman Missal of 1962.  This form of the Mass was designated by Pope Benedict as the Extraordinary Form of the Mass.  The Mass according to the Roman Missal of 2011 (which we celebrate usually) was designated as the Ordinary Form of the Mass.  Sounds similar to the current Episcopalian Book of Common Prayer, in which their Eucharist and Office of the Hours are given in Rite I (traditional texts) and Rite II (modern texts).

Currently, all of our Masses are in the Ordinary Form.  However, beginning on January 5, 2020, we will have Mass in the Extraordinary Form, that is, the Traditional Latin Mass according to the 1962 Roman Missal, on the first Sunday of each month at 12:30 PM.

FINALLY, EULOGIES

No, the subtitle does not mean we're "finally getting to do eulogies".  I mean "finally", as in "last, but not least."  I'm going to be as diplomatic as I can possibly be.

The Roman Missal does not allow for eulogies at funeral Masses.  The General Instruction forbids it, regardless of how many neighboring parishes may allow for them.  We at Sacred Heart, do not.  There is no place for it at Mass.  At the wake, yes.  At the coalition after the burial, yes.  At Holy Mass, absolutely not.  Not after Communion, nor as a "prelude" to a reading.  Nor should the Prayer of the Faithful be written like a eulogy.

I've been an organist for 38-1/2 years, 8-1/2 of those years here at Sacred Heart.  I've seen firsthand my share of abuse in eulogies.  I once covered a funeral at a church that is now closed.  At this funeral, everything went smooth --- that is, until I intoned the first five notes of the standard recessional, In Paradisum.  Suddenly, the undertakers scrambled over to the celebrant, "Wait!  You forgot the eulogy!"  Now I've seen everything.  So, the priest allowed it, and here come these two ladies putting up a 15-minute standup comic routine, at the expense of the souls who were just nourished by the Blessed Sacrament, talking about how the deceased told them they had too much to drink.  Mass is not the place for this kind of abuse.

Holy Mass isn't to celebrate the life of a deceased loved one.  That's what the wake is for, or the gathering after the funeral.  The funeral Mass is where we pray for the deceased - for his/her sins be forgiven, and to be welcomed to heaven.  After all, Mass is supposed to help lead us to heaven, not bring heaven to us.  Remember this next time you get a "no" answer when asking for a eulogy.

Sunday XXVIII THROUGH the Year

Anyone ever notice that while most vernacular tongues (including English) label their Sundays of the "green seasons" as Sundays of Ordinary Time, I have been making it a habit of using the label that was being used for the first few years of the "Novus Ordo" (roughly 1969-1975) as Sundays of the Year.  In printing the bulletins, I have also labeled these Sundays as "Sundays of the Year".  This actually goes in line with the Latin labeling of such Sundays (remember, the English Mass we celebrate is a translation of the Latin, not the other way around).  In the Latin Missal, even to this day, this Sunday would be numbered as "Dominica XXVIII per Annum", which translates (according to 1969-1975 usage, anyways), "28th Sunday of the Year".  Literally translated, it's "28th Sunday THROUGH the Year", "per" meaning "through".  "Per Christum Dominum Nostrum" = "Through Christ our Lord".  "Per ipsum, cum ipsum, et in ipsum" = "Through him, with him, and in him".  I realized that when I started looking through the headings of the Psalm settings of Fr. Samuel Weber, one of my favorite Benedictine composers (along with the late Fr. Columba Kelly - both from St. Meinrad Archabbey in Indiana).  If you scroll down to the Psalm 98 setting and click on the "PDF" link at the end of that line, you will see that Fr. Weber used the literal translation in his heading - "Sunday XXVIII through the Year".

Weird note: Google Translate does well in many translations, but not totally accurate with Latin, I don't think.  But if you type in "Ordinary Time" in English and translate to Latin, you get "per Annum".  However, if you type in "per Annum" in Latin and translate to English, you get "a year", forgetting the "per", or "through".  As Sir Paul McCartney utters in the Beatles' hit Penny Lane, "very strange!"

Without further ado...

Sunday XXV, and Cantate Domino

CANTATE DOMINO

Cantate Domino is Latin for Sing to the Lord.  You've often heard that beginning of Psalms 96 (95) and 98 (97), Cantate Domino canticum novum, that is, Sing to the Lord a new song.

Last year I used the theme Glorify the Lord with me (from Psalm 34 (33)) as what I was hoping to be motivation for a few voices to come re-start our parish choir.  Well, this year I'm going to use Cantate Domino.  We're looking for voices of all ranges to re-start our parish choir and SING TO THE LORD!

Rehearsal time: 10 AM
Mass time: 11:15 AM

See the bulletin for details, and me (after any weekend Mass) about joining us.

Corpus et Sanguis Christi, First Communion, and Most Sacred Heart, and THANK YOU!

Jump to
Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ
Most Sacred Heart of Jesus

THANK YOU!

As of the end of the 11:15 Mass this past weekend (June 15/16), I have now broken the record for the longest job I have ever held any time in my life - ever!  The previous record of eight years, two months, was my service at Precious Blood Church in Woonsocket (April 1989-June 1997).

If you count the three months I was organist here from January-April 1989, I've actually been here a total of eight years, five months.  A lot has changed in those thirty years.  Working conditions and pay, and my own attitude toward life (I was 24-1/2 in my first stint here, I am now almost at the age of qualification for AARP membership!), definitely, in my snarky opinion, have improved greatly.  I've learned a lot more about liturgy over those years as well.  This second stint of nearly 8-1/4 years has been a great ride, and I have every intention of continuing that ride.

"OK - I'm reading this.  Does that mean you're leaving?" you might ask.  ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!

What I am saying, however, is this...
It is thanks to Father Bucci and the wonderful people of Sacred Heart Parish that I have been able to maintain my longevity here.  I also have Dave Sylvester, my predecessor, to thank, as he was the one who said to me, "I want to retire and I want YOU to take my place!"  I got to know Father Bucci when I was at Holy Name.  He was filling in for Father Kevin Fisette on a given Sunday for the Extraordinary Form of the Mass.  We got talking music and the thought going in my head was that we need more priests like Father Bucci.

So, thank you, Dave.  Thank you, Father Bucci.  And most of all, thank you, the wonderful people of Sacred Heart.  Thank you all for your support and encouragement, past, present, and future!  God bless you all!

And so, without further ado...

VI Easter

I took the liberty of adding a few extra notes and listen links in this post.  On those links that emanated from Sacred Heart, which are in the form of YouTube videos, I added some information on the music via "title cards" within the videos.  Enjoy!

MUSIC FOR HOLY MASS

Ordinary: Cristo Risusciti (Luigi Picchi) (Memorial and Amen are adapted)

The rest:
Entrance hymn: Christ the Lord is ris'n today (Worship hymnal, #452) (Listen)
- The tune is "Surgit in haec dies", on which the current Mass setting we are using ("Cristo Risusciti") is based.  The listen link given was recorded from our choir loft on VI Easter three years ago.  The sung Sanctus, Memorial, Amen, and Agnus Dei are also on this link, which I aptly titled "Fun with 'Surgit in Haec Dies'".
Psalm 67: R./ O God, let all the nations praise you (Sam Schmitt) (PDF) (Listen)
- Another clip from three years ago.  The composer, Sam Schmitt, like me, is one of several composers who contributed Psalm settings to the Chabanel Psalm Project, started by Jeff Ostrowski, at Corpus Christi Watershed.  I have used a number of Sam's settings from these pages here at Sacred Heart.  These settings, by the way, are free to use in parishes.
Alleluia: O filii et filiae (Mode II/BMP) (PDF)
Offertory hymn: The strife is o'er (Worship hymnal, #451) (Listen)
Communion music:
- (11:15) Concordi laetitia (Mode VI)
- (all others) Psalm 51, R./ The Holy Spirit will teach you, alleluia, all the things I have said unto you, alleluia, alleluia (BMP, adapted in part from Parce, Domine, Mode I) (PDF)
Meditation hymn: I vow to thee, my country (on sheets provided in the pew) (Listen)
- Music by Gustav Holst, from the "Jupiter" movement of his work, "The Planets".  Another hymn, "O God, beyond all praising", which is in our Worship hymnal, also uses this this tune.  The listen link given here is from the funeral of Princess Diana at Westminster Abbey.
Recessional hymn: A hymn of glory let us sing (Worship hymnal, #469)
- The tune is the same as "Ye watchers and ye holy ones", which we sang last weekend.

IV Easter, and Where to Find the Latin Sung Mass Responses

Some people asked me over the past couple of weeks, "Hey, where do you find the Latin responses for Mass"?  I have the answer for you.

I call your attention to the red Worship hymnal for this.  Pay heed only to the words, not necessarily the music, as most of the time, we use a setting different than what's written.  The words are the same, regardless of setting, although you might get a repeat of a word or phrase here and there.

The Kyrie (which we usually sing in Advent and Lent) is at #340.  (Incidentally, in the Latin Mass, the Kyrie is the one Ordinary part that is in Greek, not Latin.)
The Gloria is right below, at #341.
The Sanctus is at #348.
On occasion, we use the Latin Mortem tuam annuntiamus, Domine as the Memorial Acclamation (that is, the response to "The mystery of faith", or "Mysterium fidei").  That is at #349.  The translation, by the way, is simply We proclaim your death, O Lord, and profess your resurrection, until you come again.
The Agnus Dei at is #353.
Finally, Father will on occasion conclude Mass with Ite Missa est, alleluia, alleluia, to which we respond Deo gratias, alleluia, alleluia.  That is at #354 (second staff).

The Three-Day Weekend, and about Adaptations

To jump to the music list, click here.

About Adaptations in some Mass settings...

Two of our most familiar Latin settings that a number of you sing very well at Mass are the Laus Tibi Christe Mass by Federico Caudana (which we use during most of June and most of November, plus the Kyrie from that Mass in Lent) and the Cristo Risusciti Mass by Luigi Picchi (which we use during Paschaltide, after all, it's based on a tune written for Paschaltide).

At the time these two Masses were published (Cristo Risusciti was published in 1934, Laus Tibi Christe in 1963), there was no Memorial Acclamation in the Mass, and the Amen at the end of the Canon of the Mass (now known as the Eucharistic Prayer) was simply a single Amen (do do-re).

So, while the Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus, and Agnus Dei are from the actual Mass setting by the aforementioned composers, I had taken the liberty of adapting the Memorial Acclamation (in English) and Amen triplex to fit the theme of the two Masses.

In the Laus Tibi Christe Mass, I used the When we eat this bread... acclamation, adapted to the opening passages of the Gloria from that Mass, and simply used the Amen triplex that concludes the Gloria to conclude the Eucharistic Prayer.

In the Cristo Risusciti Mass (which we are singing now), I used the We proclaim your death, O Lord... acclamation, adapted to the opening and closing passages of the Agnus Dei.  The Amen triplex is also adapted to the opening passage of the Agnus Dei, but in a much more festive way.  As this Mass setting is based on a 12th century Easter hymn tune (which is in our Worship hymnal, by the way, #452), this was an easy task for me.
