THE FESTIVE THREE-DAY WEEKEND

This three-day weekend consists of the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, which, in the Ordinary Form of the Mass, takes place on the Friday after Corpus Christi, and the Solemnity of the Apostles Saints Peter and Paul, which falls on the fixed date of June 29.  Since the latter falls on a Sunday this year, it supersedes what would normally be the 13th Sunday of the Year.

Also, both of these Solemnities are patrons of ours, the former being the patron of our parish, and the latter being the patron of our cathedral.

The Brass Trio will be on hand for all Masses except for the 7:30 AM on Sunday.

So, without further ado...

MUSIC FOR HOLY MASS

Common to both feasts:
Ordinary of the Mass: Laus Tibi Christe, which we have sung the previous two weekends
Alleluia: Mode VI (also the same as the previous two weekends)

MOST SACRED HEART OF JESUS

There will be sheets (either in the pew or near the entrances of the Church) that contain the Entrance (front of paper) and Recessional (back of paper) hymns.

THE MOST HOLY TRINITY

VI-15-14

Happy Fathers Day to all the dads of the parish!

ORDINARY TIME, OR SEASON OF THE YEAR?

We are now into "Ordinary Time", which is by no means ordinary as in "regular", or in "back to normal", or (quoting the late President Warren Harding) a "return to normalcy", but in "Ordered Time".  The Roman Missal, in the Latin which it was conceived, refers to this time as "Tempus per Annum", that is, "Season of the Year".  Some might remember when the numbered Sundays were labeled as "Second Sunday of the Year" (circa 1970).  So we've gone from "Xth Sunday after Epiphany (or after Pentecost)" to "Xth Sunday of the Year" in 1970.  Then, a few years later, at least in a few vernacular tongues, it became "Xth Sunday of Ordinary Time".

BUT FIRST, SOME SOLEMNITIES!

In any case, before we get to those "numbered Sundays of the Year (er, Ordinary Time)", we have some Solemnities to get past first.  The remainder of the month of June is chock-full of solemnities of the Lord.  Four solemnities afoot, three of them on Sundays: Most Holy Trinity (this Sunday), Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Sunday VI-22), Most Sacred Heart of Jesus (Patronal Feast of our parish, Friday VI-27), and, from the Proper of Saints, Saints Peter and Paul (Sunday VI-29, Patrons of our diocesan Cathedral, and supercedes the 13th Sunday of the Year even without the patronal distinction).  With those solemnities, we will be singing the Ordinary of the Mass from Federico Caudana's Laus Tibi Christe, which is familiar to most of you at this point.

MUSIC FOR HOLY MASS

Sung Ordinary of the Mass: Missa Populare "Laus Tibi Christe", music by Federico Caudana
Alleluia: Mode VI chant (also very familiar)
- These will be the settings for the remainder of June.
Numbers given are in the red Worship hymnal.

Entrance hymn: Come now, almighty King, #487

Responsorial Psalm: Glory and praise for ever, music by yours truly
- Though called the "responsorial Psalm", this responsory is not from the Book of Psalms, but from the "Canticle of the Three Young Men", which is from the Book of the prophet Daniel 3: 52-56.  The full version of this canticle is about 30-some verses.  For the readings of the Mass, it has been truncated to five.

Offertory hymn: Holy, holy, holy, #485

Communion anthem: Psalm 150 (O praise God in his holiness), by Charles Villiers Stanford)

Meditation hymn: Jesus, my Lord, my God, my All, #488

Recessional hymn: O God, almighty Father, #484
- one of a number of translations of, and/or hymns based on, the German Gott Vater! sei gepriesen, or as I like to say, "The Gott Vater!" ;)

Sung Ordinary of the Mass: same as the previous six Sundays, that is, the Missa Cristo Risusciti by Luigi Picchi (1899-1970), based on the hymn tune known in German as Christ ist Erstanden and in Latin as Surgit in Haec Dies.

Now for the music not so common to the previous Sundays/Feasts:

Offertory hymn: Crown him with many crowns, #496

Communion anthem: Christus Vincit, music by yours truly
- Related note: I did a podcast back in 2006 in which the featured topic was "The Evolution of Christus Vincit", which went from an Ambrosian chant to a metrical Vatican rendition to the setting we are using this day, which I wrote in 1999.

Meditation hymn: Regina Caeli, #443

Recessional hymn: Go, make of all disciples, #628

SEVENTH SUNDAY OF EASTER - VI-1-14

Psalm 27: I believe that I shall see the good things of the Lord in the land of the living, music by Columba Kelly, OSB (antiphon) and Joseph Gelineau, SJ (versicles)
- Side Note: Fr. Columba Kelly is a Benedictine from the St. Meinrad Archabbey in St. Meinrad, Indiana.  Many of Fr. Kelly's compositions (along with those of fellow Benedictine Br. Tobias Colgan) are based on, or at least emulate, Gregorian chant.

SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER

or Divine Mercy Sunday, or Low Sunday,
or Quasimodo Sunday

Click here for an explanation on the above names for the Sunday that is the Octave of Easter.

THANK YOU

Special thanks to our singers Elaine, Kate, and Chris, and to our brass trio Jerry, Doug, and Ed, for their wonderful work this past Holy Week/Easter Triduum.  This being my fourth Easter (and the beginning of my fourth year) at Sacred Heart as your organist, I feel that the music this year was the best we've had since I took the reins from my predecessor (and still good friend) Dave Sylvester.

MUSIC FOR HOLY MASS

On the most part, a repeat of Easter Day.

Ordinary of the Mass and Alleluia: same as Easter Day

Entrance hymn: The day of Resurrection, Maroon, #96

Psalm 118: Give thanks to the Lord for he is good; his love is everlasting, music by Owen Alstott
- as written in the missalette for April 27.

Offertory hymn: That Easter day with joy was bright, Maroon, #98

Communion anthem: Adoro Te Devote, Chant, Mode V
- You may follow the Latin text from the red Worship hymnal (#489) if you wish.  The music in Worship is a simplified version of the chant.  However, we are using the actual chant melody.

Meditation hymn: Christians, to the Paschal Victim, Maroon, #97
- The sequence we sang before the Alleluia on Easter Day.

Marian antiphon: Regina Caeli, Worship, #443, Latin only, will not be announced.
- This will be sung just before the recessional hymn.  Traditionally, a "Marian antiphon" would be sung at this time, and varies by season.  Alma Redemptoris Mater is the Marian antiphon used from the beginning of Advent until Candlemas (February 2).  Ave Regina Caelorum is used from Candlemas through Lent.  Regina Caeli is used throughout Easter Season.  Finally, during that stretch of Ordinary Time from the day after Pentecost through the remainder of Ordinary Time (including Christ the King), Salve Regina.

Recessional hymn: Jesus Christ is ris'n today, Maroon, #85

PALM SUNDAY 2014

April 13, 2014

Once again, at three of the Masses (5:00 on Saturday, 9:00 and 11:15 on Sunday), we will be joined by our brass trio (Ed, Doug, and Jerry) which I affectionately refer to as "The Plumbers" (click here for an explanation of that nickname).  Our singers, Elaine and Kate, will be joined by our occasional tenor, Chris (husband of Kate).

Also once again, the music for the 7:30 Mass will be led by the trio of me, myself, and I.

I believe we're having a bake sale after all the Masses as well, and everyone's favorite, DOUGHBOYS!  So, bring your prayers, your voices, and your appetite!!! ;)

MUSIC FOR HOLY MASS

A good chunk of this year's Palm Sunday music is an "encore" of what we did last year on Palm Sunday.

Entrance chant: Unlike your typical Mass, where a hymn is often sung in place of the Introit (or Entrance Antiphon), the hymn is delayed until the procession of the palms, which follows the first Gospel reading (the Lord's entrance into Jerusalem).
7:30 Mass: Hosanna Filio David
- Translation: Hosanna to the Son of David. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. O King of Israel. Hosanna in the highest.
All other Masses: Pueri Haebraeorum, music by Franz Schubert, from his "Six Palm Sunday Acclamations"
- Translation: The children of the Hebrews, carried olive branches, and went to meet the Lord, crying out and saying, "Hosanna in the highest."

Procession of the Palms: All glory, laud, and honor, Maroon, #62

Gospel Acclamation: same as we've done throughout Lent

At the kneel/pause during the Passion reading: Adoramus Te, Christe, by Theodore Dubois, from his "Seven Last Words of Christ".

Offertory hymn: O sacred Head, sore wounded, Maroon, #75

Sanctus:
7:30 Mass: Mass XVIII, which we've done throughout Lent
All other Masses: the setting from "Six Palm Sunday Acclamations" by Franz Schubert
- Yes, the same Franz Schubert whose Ave Maria would be sung out first by almost any random stranger that I would ask to sing any Ave Maria on demand!

Memorial Acclamation and Amen: same as during Lent

Agnus Dei: Messa Populare "Laus Tibi Christe", music by Federico Caudana
- Same tune as the Kyrie that we sang throughout Lent.

Communion anthem: Surely he hath borne our griefs, by Georg Frederick Handel, from "Messiah"

No meditation hymn.

ST. JOSEPH, HUSBAND OF MARY

III-19-14 (Wednesday) 9 AM

Same as last year's St. Joseph program, with some exceptions:

Sung Ordinary of the Mass and Gospel Acclamation same as the rest of Lent.  However, because this is a solemnity, the Gloria may also be sung.  Should it be sung, it will be the chant from Mass VIII.

- Same tune as another hymn we do, To the Name of our salvation.  However, we don't sing this tune as slowly as on the link provided. ;)

- This is the same tune as another antiphon we've used with the same Psalm, For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord.

Offertory hymn: Worship #694 Come now, and praise the humble saint (Listen)
- Some may be familiar with another hymn that uses this early American tune.  That hymn is Jerusalem, my happy home.  The name of the tune is Land of Rest.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS

General format

Stations of the Cross with Holy Communion (and with music) is held in the Church on all Tuesdays in Lent at 7 PM.  The general format is thus:

The sequence Stabat Mater Dolorosa (At the cross Her station keeping) is sung in English, according to the "Way of the Cross" booklet provided as you enter the church.  Two verses are sung at the very beginning (the entrance of priest and ministers), two verses each at the end of Stations 1, 7, and 14, and one verse each after all the other Stations.  Those who have attended our Stations on Tuesdays are familiar with this.

Following the final Station, the Lord's Prayer is recited, followed by the Ecce Agnus Dei dialogue ("Behold the Lamb of God..." / "Lord, I am not worthy...").

Communion is received.  One of two hymns are sung in an alternating manner.  Those are:
- Let thy Blood in mercy poured (Maroon #190) (Listen) (Weeks 1, 3, and 5 of Lent)
- Jesus, my Lord, my God, my All (Worship #488) (Listen) (Weeks 2 and 4 of Lent, and Holy Week)

Recessional hymn: Lift high the cross (Worship #704) (all weeks)
