Mary, Mother of God (January 1)

Falls on a Sunday this year!  Masses are the regular Sunday schedule (Saturday at 5 PM; Sunday at 7:30, 9, and 11:15 AM).  Brass and singers are off.  I will be leading the singing from the console this weekend.

MUSIC FOR HOLY MASS

Ordinary: Mass VIII (Gl); Mass XVIII (S, Ag); Mortem Tuam; Dresden Amen
Psalm 67: R./ May God bless us in his mercy (Owen Alstott)
Alleluia "Divinum Mysterium" (Mode V, adapt. BMP) (PDF)

Voluntaries:
Prelude: improvised variations on Forest Green
Elevations: hybrid improvisations on two Ave Maria settings (Mode I and Victoria)
Postlude: Hallelujah (from "Messiah"/Handel) (organ solo reduction)

Hymns, etc.:
While shepherds watched their flocks by night (Maroon hymnal, #13, first tune)
The first Nowell (Maroon hymnal, #30)
Ave Maria (Bach/Gounod) (key of C for this basso profundo)
In the bleak midwinter (Maroon hymnal, #44)
Angels we have heard on high (Maroon hymnal, #42)

Side note: I was reading in a thread on one of the Facebook pages I frequent that some church (Catholic) used Angels we have heard on high in place of the Gloria.  Let me emphasize this: Angels we have heard on high is NOT the Gloria.  It is simply a Christmas carol with the line Gloria in excelsis Deo incorporated within.  It is perfectly appropriate as a hymn, but never in place of the Gloria or any Mass Ordinary.  Here endeth the rant.

This weekend, we have our brass trio for three of our Masses, as well as a substitute soprano.

Our substitute soprano is Eden Casteel.  Eden is very accomplished in voice and piano, not only in performance, but in teaching as well.  Each summer, she also writes a children's musical called Quonnie.  And yes, she is also well-versed in sacred music.  She even substituted for me at the organ bench one weekend in the summer of 2014.

Sanctus: A Community Mass (Richard Proulx)
Memorial Acclamation C: Holy Angels Mass (BMP)
Amen and Agnus Dei: A Community Mass (Richard Proulx)

Psalm 146: R./ Praise the Lord, my soul (BMP) (PDF)
Alleluia: Robert Twynham

Voluntaries:
Prelude: Improvisation on Leoni
- Leoni is the tune name for this weekend's offertory hymn, The God of Abraham Praise.  A good practice, when a hymn is, or at least appears to be, new to a congregation, is for the organist to incorporate the tune and variations thereof into the prelude.  Those listening will then get somewhat of an idea of what the hymn sounds like when it's actually sung.  This practice is especially good in Catholic parishes, as only part of a hymn verse is often used as an introduction, unlike most Protestant churches where the entire verse is used as an introduction.
Elevations and Postlude: "Homage à Stanford" (improvisations based on Charles Villiers Stanford's Psalm Tone VIII-based Psalm 150)

Hymns, etc.
To the Name of our salvation, Maroon hymnal, #326
The God of Abraham praise, Maroon hymnal, #285, first tune (Listen)
- In this listen link, the hymn begins at around the 1:25 mark.  In this hymn, you'll notice the three-syllable name "Abraham" is poetically condensed to two syllables, usually rendered "Abram".
O Sacrum Convivium (Roberto Remondi)
I need thee every hour, Maroon hymnal, #438, first tune
Soon may the last glad song arise, Maroon hymnal, #539, second tune
- The more familiar Lift up your heads, ye mighty gates is also sung to this tune.

Peace,
BMP

The Three-Day Weekend

For September and October, we have a change in Mass setting.  The Sanctus, Amen, and Agnus Dei are from Richard Proulx's A Community Mass, a setting we have used at times over the past few years.
Also, for September only, the Memorial Acclamation (our response to "The mystery of faith") is the same tune as the We proclaim your death, O Lord that we sang during July and August, but is actually the third acclamation, Save us, Savior of the world.  September could be referred to as the "month of the Holy Cross".  The Solemnity of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross falls on September 14 (which falls on a Wednesday this year, but if it falls on a Sunday, it takes place over the regularly numbered Sunday of Year).  In addition, the Gospel reading for this weekend is that in which Jesus speaks, "If you wish to follow me, you must deny yourself and take up your very cross".

Save us, Savior of the world, for by your cross and resurrection you have set us free.

MUSIC FOR HOLY MASS

Ordinary of the Mass:
Gloria: recited or Holy Angels Mass (BMP) (weekend Masses only)

Sunday XVIII

In light of the recent sick and twisted killing of Fr. Hamel in France by ISIS, I chose a prelude and postlude in light of that.  In a recent post I made on Facebook, I was debating whether or not I should do La Marseillaise for the postlude this weekend.  Some commenters gave me some really good suggestions.  One suggestion was the tune Iste Confessor (or Rouen, as it is called in The Hymnal 1940).  While it is used mostly with the hymn Only-Begotten, Word of God Eternal, Kathleen Pluth recently composed a translation in light of the recent events.  Another was the hymn Ecce Sacerdos Magnus.  Last year we used the Maximillian Stadler setting of Ecce Sacerdos Magnus upon the entrance of our auxiliary Bishop, the Most Rev. Robert Evans, at our Confirmation.

Therefore...

III Easter (April 10, 2016)

Hopefully we won't get any more global warming (snow)!

CHRIST THE LORD IS RISEN TODAY X4

The title, Christ the Lord is ris'n today, shows up four times in the Worship hymnal, accounting for two different texts, set to two tunes each.
One text is a paraphrase of the Easter sequence Victimae Paschali Laudes, which you heard in English on Easter Day and in Latin on the Octave, and appears at #452 and #461.  #461 is a more familiar tune to most parishes, and is the tune we are using this Sunday.  #452 is tune tune Surgit in Haec Dies, on which our Mass Ordinary for the Easter Season is based.
The other is a Charles Wesley text, which is normally set with an "alleluia" at the end of each line (in the form as in Jesus Christ is ris'n today, which we sang the last two Sundays).  The two tunes for this text are at #462 and #463.  The latter is scheduled for April 17, and is also used for the Ascension hymn Hail the day that sees him rise.

Palm Sunday Communion Anthem (a translation)

This weekend's Communion anthem, which will be repeated on Good Friday, is Johann Michael Haydn's setting of the dark-toned Tenebrae Factae Sunt.  Following is a translation:

There was darkness over the earth when the Judaeans crucified Jesus: and at about the ninth hour, Jesus cried with a loud voice: My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? And he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. Jesus cried with a loud voice and said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit. And he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
